Sara Mearns to lead master class and Só Dança collection reveal

New York City Ballet Principal Sara Mearns is one of the boldest, most popular ballerinas of our time. She is musical, dynamic, intense and glamorous. And this coming Monday, July 9, Broadway Dance Center students have the chance of a lifetime to take class from Mearns and learn some of the prima ballerina’s most valuable lessons that she uses in the studio and on stage. And to make it even more exciting, this special master class will also include a reveal of the 2018 Só Dança Sara Mearns Collection, with select items to be on sale during the event and in the Shop at BDC.

The Sara Mearns Master Class & Só Dança Collection Reveal will include a 90-minute ballet class, geared toward advanced ballet dancers ages 13 and over. Ballet slippers are required, and pointe shoes are optional for barre and center work.

“I’m very excited to be teaching this master class at BDC,” Mearns says. “I am honored that they would ask me. I will be teaching toward the the Balanchine aesthetic because that’s my baseline training, but I will be adding ideas and combinations that I’ve learned along the way from many, many great teachers and ballet masters I’ve worked with. I think it’s important to incorporate bold ideas from a young age into class, because it will translate to the stage one day. The class is geared toward an advanced level who are able to absorb and keep up with all the thoughts I will throw at them!”

The class will be similar to the one that Mearns gives herself every day – one that is comprised of different combinations she has collected from different teachers over the years. She describes it as “not too complicated”, as she feels simplicity is key. “It’s the thought process behind it and how you attack the combo that makes the difference and where the learning begins,” she adds.

In addition, Mearns will discuss stage presence and how to hold yourself as you were standing center stage, even in the classroom.

Class participants will get a sneak peek at Mearns’s latest collection for Só Dança, which will feature leotards, leggings, tops and bottoms, and warmup gear.

“My new collection for the summer is very exciting and very edgy,” Mearns describes. “We’ve added some shimmer elements, along with details that have the look of leather. I definitely wanted young ladies to feel strong and confident in these pieces, so I felt this would definitely compliment that feeling. I also have some silhouettes in this collection that I’ve never tried or even worn myself, and I wanted to challenge myself to wear more creative, edgy designs.”

Mearns says she is excited to share this collection with other dancers, and she’s very excited to be doing so at a place like BDC.

“I have traveled many places around the world, big cities that have major ballet companies, and it’s only in New York that you have studios like BDC, where anyone can come and take any form of dance you can think of under one roof!” Mearns says. “I know my fiancé, Joshua Bergasse, loves teaching there and has for many years. The energy inside the studios and even outside, where many people watch in the windows, is amazing and so addicting that you want to go back for more. I feel so lucky to be able to live in a city that this is available!”

The Sara Mearns Master Class & Só Dança Collection Reveal will take place at BDC this Monday, July 9, 10am-12pm. Cost is $35. To register, visitó-dança-collection-reveal.
