Kitty Carter’s Team Classes at Broadway Dance Center

Most dancers can name at least one – those teachers who really push hard and demand the most, but it’s clear that they do so because they care. Most often, they leave a real and lasting impression. Students look back and feel grateful for what they learned, and how they were led to grow, from this teacher of tough exterior, soft interior. Kitty Carter seems to be one of these teachers. And, for the first time, she recently came to Broadway Dance Center (BDC) on April 30, to teach her signature Team Audition Prep class!

Carter grew up dedicated to dance, spending summers studying with Luigi and loving Broadway in New York City. She trained in various styles of dance, and obtained her BFA at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Her career grew, and she became a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader. After retiring from the squad, she became its Technical Advisor/Coach. She also owns the dance studio Kitty Carter’s Dance Factory (Dallas), where she teaches Mondays through Thursdays.

Broadway Dance Center is proud to continue hosting its acclaimed Broadway Choreography Series. This ongoing master class series offers the opportunity to learn the original choreography to some of Broadway’s finest shows, presented by actual cast members and/or creative team straight from the stage to the studio.

Past classes have featured choreography from award-winning musicals like Holiday Inn, Bandstand, Anastasia, On Your Feet, Miss SaigonCharlie and the Chocolate Factory and more!

BDC's Wellness Weekend.

BDC’s inaugural Wellness Weekend

There is a slow but steady shift happening in the dance world, and we like it. A lot. This shift recognizes that physical and mental health are incredibly important, and both studios and companies should be adopting a culture to support the health and wellbeing of their dancers. At BDC, faculty and staff know that your body is your instrument, and your mind the composer. And BDC is taking steps to help you keep your symphony in full force.

One of the steps BDC took recently was to initiate the BDC Wellness Weekend. The inaugural event took place at BDC’s bright new 65thStreet location, right near Lincoln Center. The weekend brought together the local community of professional dancers, recreational dancers, children, families and wellness business providers.

Interview with Denise Garvey of the Jets Flight Crew on Audition Prep Classes

Denise Garvey founded the Jets Flight Crew in 2007. What began as a basic squad of 10 women performing at home games has grown into a fully realized squad of 40 women. The Jets Flight Crew continues to perform to crowds of 82,000 fans on game nights and has expanded to include media and event appearances and a Junior Fight Crew program for girls ages 7-14.

It’s no surprise Garvey has managed to build a successful squad. She learned all about the business of NBA and NFL cheer squads during her years performing as a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader and later as a Knicks City Dancer. She is a well-known leader in the cheer community and hosted the 2014 NFL Cheer Director’s Conference in New York.

Here, we speak with Garvey about what it’s like to work as part of the Jets Flight Crew and about the upcoming Flight Crew Audition Prep Classes being offered at Broadway Dance Center on March 14 and 28, 2018.

7 Reasons to Keep Warm at BDC’s Winter Intensive

Broadway Dance Center (BDC) will offer its four-day Winter Intensive this December 27-30, and dancers can partake in dance-packed days that will be sure to keep their body and soul nice and warm. Here are seven reasons we think you’d fare well cozying up in the BDC studios this December.

#1. The obvious: lots of dance!

With more than 20 hours of dance over a span of four days, you’ll be bound to keep warm. Styles include ballet, jazz technique, theater, contemporary, improvisation, hip hop and more. There will be no chance to get cold when you’ll be dancing this much! “It’s a short-term commitment, but you get a lot of bang for your buck,” says BDC’s Director of Youth Programming Allie Beach.

#2. Rockstar faculty.

BDC brings the best of the best. Classes are separated into Junior, Senior and Professional age groupings, and so far the faculty includes phenomenal teachers such as Sheila Barker, Stacie Webster, Neil Schwartz, Debbie Wilson, Chio, Ricky Hinds and Hannah Frederick. With a batch of teachers this strong, you’re bound to learn and grow tons.

ABW Theater Review on Lindance Life Blog

20150915_212311-1Absolute Beginner Workshop student, Linda Flores, took ABW Theater with Katelin Zelon last fall. Read about her experience on her blog, Lindance Life.

A few days after class, we would get an email from Katelin with an encouraging message, list of songs we used in class, and video links to iconic dances from the era. It was at this point that I realized Katelin is happily going above and beyond in teaching her first Absolute Beginner Workshop and I’m getting waaay more than my money’s worth!

Watching a Broadway musical and then trying out the choreography is probably something best attempted in private.

But dancers with skill and courage are shuffling off to Broadway Dance Center, a studio in the heart of the Theater District, to learn choreography from musicals currently onstage.

Yes, that’s Bernadette Peters’ voice you hear singing “Star Tar” from the original Off-Broadway cast album of Dames at Sea. The new Broadway production’s director/choreographer Randy Skinner held a master tap class at the Broadway Dance Center, proving that classic American dance style is alive and very well.

BROADWAY DANCE CENTER: WHERE NEW YORK’S FINEST GATHER TO GET DOWN

If anything, Broadway Dance Center — the hub of all things movement in New York City — lives up to its name. Yet, while it’s intended for professionals, it’s still great for noobs. I found BDC to be oddly welcoming to the outsider who was interested in dropping in for a formal dance party.
