BDC allows international students to shine

Broadway Dance Center (BDC) is synonymous with the New York dance scene, an institution recognized as a place to truly experience dance to the fullest. With the motto, “Inspiring The World to Dance”, BDC welcomes students from all over the world to its studio in the heart of the Broadway Theater District, to immerse themselves in training in all styles and genres.

BDC runs an International Student Visa Program (ISVP), allowing international students to obtain an M-1 Visa to attend classes for a three-month, six-month or one-year period. Dancers from over 96 countries have graced the halls of BDC, creating a unique community that truly embodies diversity and inclusion.

Al Blackstone’s “Freddie Falls in Love” comes to The Joyce

Broadway Dance Center has always been Al Blackstone’s home away from home. His teachers, mentors, and experience as a student helped shape him into the educator he is today. Since his first class in 2011 with just a few students, Al now packs the room no matter when he’s teaching. Beyond that, his courage to share his talent, vulnerability, charm, and lovable goofiness has created an undeniable ripple effect throughout the industry, challenging our preconceived notions about what ‘musical theater’ means, and how we can cultivate the energy of a dance class. Being a teacher or performer doesn’t mean masking who you are to portray someone or something else–quite the opposite, actually. It requires tapping even deeper into who you are in order to create a more meaningful connection with others, whether it’s your audience, dance partner, students, or fellow peers in class.

BDC gears up for annual Musical Theater Weekend Intensive

Broadway Dance Center is thrilled to once again host its annual Musical Theater Weekend Intensive on June 15 and 16. This incredible two-day workshop features closed classes, professional seminars, mock auditions and exclusive panels for the aspiring Broadway performer.

Students (advanced dancers ages 14-29) will learn choreography from some of Broadway’s current musical hits, the art of crafting a resume, singing and acting techniques to ace any casting, how to land an agent, and what it takes to stand out at auditions. The weekend will culminate with a mock audition where students will get individualized feedback from industry professionals.

heels dance classes

Dancing in heels with Yanis Marshall

Dancing in heels has long been an industry essential in nearly every style of dance — but a challenge for dancers who have primarily trained in sneakers, flat shoes and bare feet.  And nowadays, dancing in heels is not just for the ladies — men are rocking a stiletto, too! Yanis Marshall came onto the scene as a finalist on Britain’s Got Talent, amazing the audience with his choreography to the Spice Girls…in 5-inch heels! To Marshall, the question is not, “Why do you dance in heels?” but “Why not?”

Since his television debut, Marshall has been a coach on Dancing with the Stars and So You Think You Can Dance and has been touring to sold-out dance classes across the globe. Broadway Dance Center is thrilled to have Marshall back for a series of Int/Adv Heels master classes October 22-24.

Broadway Dance Center walks in New York City’s Walk for Breast Cancer

For so many women, being diagnosed with breast cancer is the most terrifying thing they’ll ever experience. Treatment can be just as difficult. It is one of the most common forms of cancer around today. Yet every year, during National Breast Cancer Month (October), hundreds of people walk in solidarity with breast cancer patients and survivors – and in an effort to raise money for research toward a cure. A group of dancers from Broadway Dance Center (BDC) has joined these walkers every year since 2006 – this year, on October 14.

A troupe of dancers from BDC will also perform for and cheer on walkers, helping to lighten the mood of what can be a very heavy and emotional experience for many involved with the walk. All will wear “Team BDC” t-shirts. Dancers will start the day at 7:45am, and walkers at 9am. On October 10 and 11, all may meet at the studio to make signs for the walk. Go here to learn more about the event and get registered for the walk. One can also donate at that link – a way to contribute to the cause if walking on that day isn’t possible.
